Trans PRK surgery in patients with a history of ocular herpes

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report outcome of transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (Trans PRK), in patients with inactive history of herpetic keratitis (HSV). All the patients had a preoperative prophylactic therapy.

Setting:

Levant Hospital - Lebanon

Methods:

A retrospective case series, between 2013 and 2017 on patients with a history of ocular herpes for at least 1 year before the Trans PRK surgery. All the patients where given a preoperative prophylaxis with oral valacyclovir for 5 days and topical acyclovir ointment 3 times per day for 5 days with artificial tears. The main outcome measure was postoperative recurrence of ocular herpes.

Results:

All the Trans PRK procedure went without any complications. During the one year follow up there was no reactivation of the virus in the 14 patients that were included in the study. The postoperative treatment included oral valacyclovir for 10 days after the surgery.

Conclusions:

Based on our results we can conclude that the antiviral prophylaxis may protect from the reactivation of the herpes simplex virus after Trans PRK. And that this laser procedure was safe for patients with history of herpes.
