Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare functional outcomes after refined single-step TransPRK using same excimer platforms with different repetition rates (500 Hz and 1050 Hz) in correction of mild-moderate myopia.

Setting:

Bina Eye Hospital, Tehran

Methods:

In this prospective comparative case-series, patients with myopia (≤6 diopters) with or without astigmatism were recruited. The same expert surgeon (S.A.M) operated on the Schwind Amaris 500 Hz (173 eyes) and 1050 Hz (69 eyes) laser platform implementing the same surgical technique. Mean follow-up was 6 months. Preoperative and postoperative visual acuity, refraction, predictability, efficacy and safety, and HOA were evaluated. Two sample t-test and Mann-Whitney U test were appropriately applied for statistical analysis.

Results:

Mean age of 1050 Hz group was significantly higher (29.54±4.04 vs 28.39±5.40, P=0.01), as well as F/M ratio (7.6 vs 2.3, P=0.003). Mean preoperative SE and astigmatism of all patients were -3.65±1.58 and -1.11±1.27D, respectively. Preoperative SE, astigmatism, and LogMAR-UDVA were comparable between groups. The 1050 Hz group achieved a better postoperative UDVA (-0.13±0.07 vs -0.09±0.13, P=0.014). Furthermore, efficacy and safety indices were significantly better in the 1050 Hz group (1.38±0.22 vs 1.18±0.25, P=0.001; and 1.37±0.22 vs 1.25±0.22, P=0.002). Correction of visual refraction and HOA were comparable.

Conclusions:

In correcting mild-moderate myopia using the refined single-step TransPRK technique, Amaris 1050 Hz platform resulted in superior UDVA as well as efficacy and safety compared to Amaris 500 Hz. No significant differences were noticed in visual refraction and HOA.
