Abstract Details
Purpose:
To assess the safety and efficacy of SLT in patients with glaucoma and to assess the sustainability of intra-ocular pressure (IOP) lowering after SLT
Setting:
Luton and Dunstable Hospital - Ophthalmology department, UK
Methods:
This retrospective study included 60 eyes of 60 patients who underwent SLT. IOPs were noted pre-operatively and at 3, 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 months post-treatment. Primary response was defined as a reduction in IOP of at least 10% at three months. At each stage of follow-up, any patient whose reduction in IOP was less than 10% compared to pre-procedure IOP or who had a change in treatment, was excluded. Safety was assessed by looking for IOP spikes at three months and any reduction in visual acuity (VA) or inflammatory complications
Results:
Primary response rate was 73.3% and was 43.3%, 26.7%, 18.3%,10% and 3.3% at 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 months respectively. Mean reduction in IOP was 21.4% at three months. Thirteen patients required further intervention (repeat SLT, trabeculectomy or cyclodiode). No patients suffered reduction in VA or inflammatory complications. Two patients had IOP spikes and required alternative treatment methods
Conclusions:
SLT has a good safety profile and good long-term efficacy in reducing IOP
