Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study the effectiveness of different methods of preoperative prevention of antibiotics.

Setting:

Eye Diseases Department, the Bashkir State Medical University, Ufa Institute of Chemistry.

Methods:

The research involved 72 patients (72 eyes) with immature age-related cataract and glaucoma. The first group of patients (27 eyes) used instillation 0,3 % ciprofloxacin solution 4 times a day. In the second group of patients (24 eyes) applied instillations 0,5 % moxifloxacin solution 4 times a day. The third group of patients (21 eyes) were put to the conjunctival cavities the ophthalmic medicinal films with moxifloxacin once 20 hours prior to the operation. Analysis was conducted of materials of conjunctival cavity before and after the course of prevention of topical antibiotics.

Results:

Microbiological study of material the conjunctival cavity was found that before the course antibiotic prevention preoperatively in 56 (77.8%) tested positive for sowing: Staphylococcus epidermidis (46,4%,n =26), Diphtheroid (17,9%,n=10), Streptococcus pneumonia (16,1%,n=9), Staphylococcus aureus (12,5%,n=7), Escherichia coli (5,6%,n=3), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (1,8%,n=1). In the first group of patients, a slight decrease in the opportunistic microflora was observed from 77.8% to 48.1% (p> 0.05); in the second group of patients – from 75.0% to 20.8% (p> 0.05). In the third group of patients, the greatest degree of eradication of bacterial microflora was from 80.9% to 4.7% (p> 0.05).

Conclusions:

Using different methods of antibiotic prophylaxis led to reduction amount of microflora conjunctival sac. The most effective method of prevention of postoperative infection complications is the use ophthalmic medicinal films with moxifloxacin.
