Abstract Details
Purpose:
Chalazion is a benign, painless nodule in the upper or lower eyelid. In most cases chalazia resolve on their own, however, some chalazia may persist for several weeks and become cosmetically unappealing. In the present study we investigated the results of the use of azithromycin eye drops as therapy for chalazion.
Setting:
General Hospital of Kastoria, Greece
Methods:
18 patients with chalazion were examined (10 men and 8 women, aged 23-58). 9 patients were treated with conservative measures (warm compresses twice a day, eyelid massage and an eye ointment of Gentamicin 0,3%/Dexamethasone 0,03% for 10 days) while the rest were treated with all of the above plus Azithromycin 1,5% eye drops twice a day for 3 days.
Results:
In the 1st group of patients (usual treatment without Azithromycin drops) the resolution time for the chalazion ranged from 15-60 days (mean 32,5 days) while in the 2nd group the resolution time ranged from 15-45 days (mean 28,2 days).
Conclusions:
Although in many cases chalazia resolve on their own, patients seek medical advice for faster resolution due to aesthetic reasons. The usual conservative treatment seems fairly effective. Azithromycin drops, which have demonstrated notable efficacy in cases of chronic blepharitis, may have a role in the treatment of chalazia as adjuvant therapy.
