Abstract Details
Purpose:
To determine patients’ attendance to the Emergency Department at a Secondary Health Unit.
Setting:
Eye Department , Volos General Hospital, Thessaly , Greece.
Methods:
Retrospective analysis of the patients attending the Emergency Eye Department from 15 January to 15 July 2018.
Results:
During the six month period, 1614 patients made a total of 1707 visits . Superficial foreign body removal was the most common diagnosis (242/1614, 14,99%) followed by corneal abrasions (186/1614, 11,52%). Approximately one tenth of the patients were found with viral conjunctivitis. Ocular trauma (penetrating – perforating injuries: 2 , 0,12%) and vascular occluding disorders ( Central Retinal Vein Occlusion: 1, 0,06% and Central Retinal Artery Occlusion: 2 , 0,12 % ) were rarely seen .
Conclusions:
Our findings show that mild to moderate ocular conditions were the most frequent reason to visit Eye Casualties. The fact that the majority were industry related injuries indicates that proper safety measures could prevent them and ease the health care workload.
