The price of vanity: cosmetic iris implants and its consequences

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report the ocular complications and management following bilateral implantation of cosmetic iris implants.

Setting:

University Ayr Hospital, Ayr Scotland UK

Methods:

A 46 year old Caucasian female underwent bilateral cosmetic iris implants to change the colour of her natural iris. 2 years following implantation she was noted to have bilateral corneal edema secondary to progressive endothelial cell loss associated with raised intraocular pressure. Following informed consent she underwent bilateral explanation of the cosmetic iris implants. Microscopic evaluation of the implants revealed poor design, poor quality, and serrated edges.

Conclusions:

Cosmetic iris implants in phakic eyes can lead to severe medium to long term ocular complications. Patient education is important in order to avoid these procedures taking place.
