Abstract Details
Purpose:
To study and analyse the main biometric parameters of the eye and their correlations in population of Azerbaijan with consideration of gender and age factors.
Setting:
National Center of Ophthalmology named after academician Z. Aliyeva, (Azerbaijan, Baku)
Methods:
This study included 1014 eyes of 902 patients (441 men and 461 women). The mean age of the patients was 60,12±15,33 years . All measurements were performed using IOL Master 500 (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Germany). The axial length, anterior chamber depth, radius of the corneal curvature and corneal diameter were analysed separately for men and women as well as in subgroups formed by age. In addition, all parameters and their correlations were analysed by the 4 subgroups formed on the basis of axial length value. Patients with ocular pathology that could affect correct biometric parameters were excluded from the study.
Results:
The mean values of the 4 main biometric parameters: axial length was 24,13±1,61 mm; anterior chamber depth – 3,21±0,42 mm; radius of the corneal curvature – 7,69±0,21 mm; corneal diameter 11,90±0,39 mm (P<0,05), and all the above parameters were higher in men than in women. The maximum correlation was obtained between the radius of the corneal curvature and corneal diameter in subgroups with short and normal eyes (ρ=0,67 and ρ=0,51; P<0,01), anterior chamber depth and corneal diameter in subgroup with extremely long eyes (ρ=0,46; P<0,01). An inverse correlation was found between age and biometric parameters.
Conclusions:
The mean values of the main ophthalmobiometric parameters among the population in Azerbaijan have been determined in this study. The analysis of the obtained results revealed the presence of the moderate inverse correlation between age and eye biometry, as well as some differences of parameters in the males and females
