Abstract Details
Purpose:
Investigate Scheimpflug-based keratoconus corneal evidence in known KCN family members.
Setting:
LaserVision gr Clinical and Research Eye Institute, Athens, Greece
Methods:
In a prospective study, 165 keratoconus patients (Kps) had their parents and in some, their siblings imaged by Scheimpflug-tomography mapping (Stm). Stm was reviewed by an independent, blinded expert for known and also suspicious signs of early ectasia.
Results:
Kps: 21 (56%) female, 131 (79%) male of mean age 25 ± 7 years (15-45). KCN or suspicion was identified in one of their two parents in an astounding 97% of these cases and in both parents in 8% of the cases. In 97 cases of the 1 or more of the siblings evaluated 45% showed KCN or suspicion.
Conclusions:
These findings suggest an inheritance pattern for KCN in Greeks, that warrants further genetic testing.. Screening KCN in the general population and especially in all family members of Kps is suggested by these data.
