Abstract Details
Purpose:
The aim of this cross sectional study is to assess prevalence of keratoconus in 500 Egyptian populations with high corneal astigmatism attending outpatient clinic
Setting:
Rooya Center, Alexandria during the period from April 2014 to September 2018
Methods:
A retrospective study through evaluation of records of 500 patients attending outpatient clinic for routine spectacles prescription and having corneal astigmatism more than 2 diopters. Corneal astigmatism was measured using automated keratometry while diagnosis of keratoconus was based on pentacam results
Results:
From the attending patients 350 had corneal astigmatism between 2 and 4 diopters and 149 between 4 and 6 diopters with only one patient with corneal astigmatism more than 6 diopters. This patient had keratoconus based on pentacam. prevalence of keratoconus was estimated to be about 2% and 12 % in patients with corneal cylinder less than 4 and more than 4 respectively
Conclusions:
keratoconus represent a significant cause of high corneal astigmatism especially for corneal astigmatism more than 4 diopters
