Abstract Details

Purpose:

To develop a portable electromyographic technique for the monitoring of extra – ocular muscle activity that objectively evaluates discomfort glare in patients with corneal diseases

Setting:

Institute of Vision and Optics, University Hospital of Heraklion (PAGNI)

Methods:

Keratoconic patients, patients with corneal dystrophies and patients who underwent corneal transplantation, corneal crosslinking or refractive surgery at least a year ago have been enrolled in the study. An age matched group served as control. The electrical activity of the extra-ocular muscles (orbicularis oculi, frontal muscle) in different light stimuli has been recorded using two small surface electrodes. A third electrode positioned behind the ear served as a ground. The electromyogram – based responses under discomfort glare circumstances has been obtained from all groups and appropriately statistically analyzed.

Results:

Preliminary results show difference in discomfort glare responses between the examined groups thus indicating a visual performance disturbance that may affect quality of vision in patients with corneal diseases.

Conclusions:

Development of an objective method for discomfort glare evaluation may lead to better understanding and evaluation of quality of vision in patients suffering from corneal diseases.
