Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the visual outcome in relation to the steepest K, the visual outcome in respect to the underlying pathology, the gain of visual acuity lines, the prognosis related with the refraction present. In addition the daily wearing schedule of scleral lens patients reflecting their every day needs.
Setting:
Eyeart contact lens fitting center
Methods:
One hundred and thirty seven cases that have been fitted with Epsilon scleral lenses, have been studied. Parameters analyzed include, keratometric readings, central astigmatism, lens fitting characteristics and optical correction, underlying corneal pathology, best contact lens visual acuity, daily wearing schedule, possible presence of opacities, refraction and best spectacle visual acuity.
Results:
Lenses to steep corneas up to 67.54D and central astigmatism ranging from 0.22 to 21.16D, have been fitted following the basic fitting protocol. For those case that spectacle was possible, mean gain of visual acuity line was 3.3 line, with maximum of 9.8. Gain of lines is greater for those cases that refraction cannot be performed due to corneal irregularity. Mean use of lenses was 13 hours with maximum of 16.
Conclusions:
The fitting of Epsilon scleral lenses for irregular astigmatism because of keratoconus, post- graft, post trauma, post refractive surgery, myopia and astigmatism, can be performed using the standard fitting protocol, providing significant visual acuity improvement, long wearing hours with apparent respect of ocular physiology, reversible, as an alternative to surgical correcting procedures.
