Cataract and glaucoma surgery in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the cataract incidence and progression after glaucoma filtration surgery in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma.
Setting:
General Hospital of Athens «Ippokratio», Athens, Greece.

Methods:
In this study 14 eyes of 12 primary open-angle glaucoma patients that underwent filtration surgery were included.
Results:
The incidence and progression of cataract was statistically significant (p<0.05). Cataract surgery was perform at 85% of the patients 8 to 12 months after filtration surgery and showed statistically significant association with older age and use of mitomycin C.
Conclusions:
Patients with primary open-angle glaucoma undergoing glaucoma filtration surgery are at increased risk for the development of cataract. Higher rates of cataract are common with the use of mitomycin C during glaucoma filtration surgery.
