Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate changes in dry eye symptoms and diagnostic test values after cataract surgery
Setting:
General hospital Dubrovnik
Methods:
We analyzed 50 eyes ( 50 patients) who underwent uncomplicated phacoemulsification. Ocular surface disease questionnaire (OSDI),Schirmer I test, tear film break-up time (TBUT), fluorescein staining (Oxford scale) were evaluated preoperatively, at 1 week, 1 month and 3 months postoperatively.
Results:
Preoperative dry eye was diagnosed in 22 %. Seven days after phacoemulsification, the prevalence of dry eye was 34%. The severity of dry eye peaked seven days post-phacoemulsification. The mean OSDI scores on day 7 and months 1 and 3 postoperatively were 22.26, 19.25, and 17.34, respectively. Within 3 months post-surgery, both the symptoms and signs showed rapid and gradual improvements.
Conclusions:
: Cataract surgery affects ocular surface. Dry eye can be induced or deteriorated after cataract surgery.
