Long term outcomes of retro fixated iris claw lens at a tertiary eye centre in Uttarakhand, India

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyse the visual outcomes and complications of retro fixated iris claw lens ( RICL) in complicated and routine cases with posterior capsular rupture. The SRK/T formula was used to calculate IOL power.

Setting:

It was a retrospective study carried out at Nirmal Eye Institute, Rishikesh, India. The study period was between July 2015 to July 2016. The study sample was 50 patients who underwent primary or secondary RICL implantation

Methods:

The records of patients were reviewed with a follow up duration of 3 years. Data recorded included demographic profile, pre & post operative un corrected visual acuity (UCVA) , best corrected visual acuity ( BCVA) , intra ocular pressure ( IOP ) , slit lamp examination , primary or secondary procedure, complications and refractive outcomes.

Results:

Mean age was 62.64 +/- 8.08 years. Mean pre & post operative BCVA were LogMAR ( 1.5204 +/- 0.3397) and LogMAR ( 0.8314 +/- 0.4853 ) respectively, Mean pre operative IOP was ( 15.24 +/- 3.83 mmHg ) , primary RICL implantation was carried out in 46 cases & secondary procedure was carried out for 4 aphakic cases. Complications in terms of ovalisation of pupil were seen in 29 out of 50 eyes and the final refractive outcome was noted.

Conclusions:

RICL remains a safe and effective procedure with a shorter learning curve and good visual outcomes. It is comparable in results to other secondary intraocular lens implantation procedures.
