Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the optical and predicted visual performance provided by the Next Generation monofocal, TECNIS intraocular lens (IOL), model ICB00, with that of the TECNIS 1-piece monofocal IOL, model ZCB00.

Setting:

Implant R&D, Johnson and Johnson Surgical Vision, The Netherlands

Methods:

Model ICB00 consists of a continuous higher order aspheric surface that results in a continuous power change from the center to the periphery of the lens. This refractive profile has been designed to improve intermediate performance, while keeping distance vision and photic phenomena comparable to an aspheric monofocal IOL. Through-focus modulation transfer function (MTF) was measured for both models to assess optical behavior and predict visual performance. Binocular visual acuity (VA) was simulated using the area under the MTF from 1 to 50 cycles per mm. Photic phenomena were pre-clinically assessed by measuring the light intensity profile of each model.

Results:

Simulated VA predicted an improvement in intermediate vision for model ICB00 as compared to model ZCB00. Distance vision MTF was comparable for both IOLs, indicating that distance image quality is comparable for both models. Photic phenomena were the same for both technologies.

Conclusions:

The optical quality and simulated visual performance provided by the Next Generation monofocal, TECNIS IOL, were compared with that of TECNIS 1-piece monofocal. Preclinical data showed that the new model improves intermediate vision, with maintaining distance image quality and keeping the same photic phenomena profile.
