Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare measurements taken using an optical low-coherence reflectometry (Lenstar LS900), swept-source optical coherence tomography (OA2000 and IOLMaster 700) and partial-coherent interferometry (IOLMaster 500) in the aspects of failure rates and operability.

Setting:

Conducted in the Wuhan Aier Eye Hospital.

Methods:

In this prospective clinical study, 280 eyes were scanned with the four biometers in a random order. The number of unobtainable axial lengh measurements was recorded and grouped as per the type and severity of cataract based on the Lens Opacities Classification System  III. In addition, the patient information input time, the examination time, the time from the intraocular lens calculation to the printing and the total time were recorded and compared.

Results:

The failure rate was 2 eyes (0.71%) with the IOLMaster700, 9 eyes (1.9%) with the OA2000, 94 eyes (20%) with the Lenstar and 117 eyes (24.9%) with the IOLMaster500. The chi-square test showed a significantly difference (p<0.01).The total operating time of OA2000 was the shortest (109.33±52.22s). Examination with the OA2000 (73.47±5.68s) took significantly shorter than IOLMaster500 (81.92±6.46s), IOLMaster 700 (84.53±5.77s) and Lenstar (99.35±8.24s) (all p< 0.01); There was no significant difference among the input time and the time from the intraocular lens calculation to the printing (all p > 0.01).

Conclusions:

SS-OCT biometers are user friendly, less time consuming and more effective at obtaining biometric measurements.
