Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the tear meniscus (TM) values measured by anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) between soft and rigid contact lens (CL) wearers and to investigate the relationship between TM and other ocular surface parameters.

Setting:

A total of 54 eyes of 27 patients who wear CL were divided into 2 groups according to CL material.

Methods:

The first group was consisted of silicone hydrogel soft CL wearers (34 eyes of 17 patients) and the second group consisted of keratoconus patients (20 eyes of 10 patients) who wear rigid gas permeable CL. Demographic characteristics, duration of CL wear, OSDI Scores, Schirmer tests, tear break-up time measurements and lower tear meniscus height (TMH) and depth (TMD) measured by the AS-OCT were recorded. TM measurements were compared between the two patient groups and the relationship between these measurements and other ocular surface parameters was evaluated.

Results:

TMH and TMD were lower in first group than the other groups (288.4 ± 72.2 and 177 ± 52.3 microns in group 1; 313.7±105.5 and 203.7 ± 58.4 microns in group 2; 317.2 ± 93.2 and 187.2 ± 48.4 microns in control group respectively). The difference in TMH between the first and control groups was statistically significant (p<0.05). There was no significant difference in the other tear meniscus values (TMH and TMD) between the groups (p> 0.05 for all). In both patient groups, there was no correlation between TM and other ocular surface parameters (p> 0.05 for all).

Conclusions:

Use of soft CL may lead to a decrease in TMH. TMH can be a more sensitive parameter in evaluating TM changes measured by AS- OCT in CL wearers. AS- OCT is a non-invasive method for detecting changes in TM in CL wearers.
