Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the visual outcome and complication rate of cataract operations performed by trainees at the ophthalmology department of AHEPA and how the implementation of a risk-factor grading system and comprehensive theoretical training affected the results.

Setting:

1st Department of Ophthalmology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, AHEPA Hospital, Greece

Methods:

Retrospective cohort study of all patients who underwent cataract surgery in our hospital by trainees between October 2017 and September 2018. Data collected include intraoperative complications, postoperative best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and refractive outcome.

Results:

Four hundred and seventy-eight eyes of 417 patients underwent cataract operation performed by 12 trainees Overall complication rate was 8.8% including posterior capsule rupture (6.5%), retained lens fragment (0.4%), anterior capsule tear (1.0%) and zonular dehiscence (1.3%) Mean postoperative BCVA was 8,6/10 and 96.8% achieved BCVA≥5/10, while 94,3% of eyes achieved a final spherical equivalent within 1D and 75.9% within 0.5D.

Conclusions:

The introduction of a risk-factor system during preoperative assessment and the appropriate assignment of cataract patients to trainee surgeons along with the implementation of organized theoretical cataract courses led to satisfactory results, similar compared to published data from other training institutions. Clinical audit of cataract surgery is of paramount importance for continuous improvement in surgical performance and patient safety.
