Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate outcomes regarding to visual acuity, refractive changes and postoperative complications after intrascleral sutureless (PCIOL) fixation in aphakic patient with absence of sufficient posterior capsular support.

Setting:

Ophthalmology Department, Cairo university

Methods:

This is a prospective non-comparative study which included 13 aphakic eyes of 13 patients with absence of sufficient posterior capsular support after complicated cataract surgery in whom sutureless intrascleral PCIOL fixation was performed. All patients having IOL implantation by this technique were evaluated for preoperative status (visual acuity and refractive error changes and preexisting ocular condition), postoperative status and complications of surgery. Anterior segment ultrasound biomicroscopy imaging was done to all patients to assess the stability and positioning of the IOL after surgery and only patients with at least 3 months of follow-up were included in this study.

Results:

The mean uncorrected visual acuity significantly improved in all patient from (1.6+0.2 SD) LogMar preoperatively to (0.45+0.2 SD) LogMar postoperatively and there was no significant difference between the pre and postoperative best corrected visual acuity means (0.42+ 0.1 SD) and (0.41+0.2 SD) respectively. All eyes had stable and well centered IOL. During the follow-up period we did not observe any decentering of the IOL, chronic ocular inflammation, bleeding (ocular hemorrhage), glaucoma, endophthalmitis and retinal detachment.

Conclusions:

Sutureless intrascleral PCIOL fixation is a safe technique allow implantation of the IOL in posterior chamber when there is insufficient posterior capsular support.
