Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the effect of a preloaded capsular tension ring(CTR) implantation on stability of intraocular lens(IOLs) in hydrophilic and hydrophobic intraocular lens insertion.

Setting:

Seoul St. Mary’s hospital Eye Institute (SSEI), Seoul, Korea

Methods:

Forty-two eyes of 39 patients had an implantation of a preloaded CTR during uncomplicated phacoemulsification surgery. The refractive outcomes and stability of IOLs were compared between hydrophilic plate form IOLs(hydrophilic group) and hydrophobic one-piece IOLs with C-loop haptics(hydrophobic group). The power of the IOL was used to calculate the predicted postoperative spherical equivalent using the SRK/T formulas. The main outcome measures were the mean error and mean absolute error of the refractive prediction error. The degree of IOL decentration and tilt were measured using Pentacam. The uncorrected near visual acuity(UCNVA) were measured postoperatively to evaluate pseudoaccommodation.

Results:

No significant differences were found between the two groups in the mean degree of IOL decentration (0.28 mm in the hydrophilic group, 0.29 mm in the hydrophobic group; P=0.254), tilt angle (2.15 degrees in the hydrophilic group, 2.56 degrees in the hydrophobic group; P=0.153), or refractive prediction error (P=0.236). The mean UCNVA was 0.29±0.2 at one day after surgery and 0.25±0.18 at 2 months after surgery, which has no significant difference statistically.

Conclusions:

The preloaded CTR implantation may help the stability of capsular bag after cataract surgery in different type of IOLs.
