Abstract Details

Purpose:

Wavefront-guided LASIK is one of the most precise and individualized refractive procedures. Nevertheless it is still discussed controversy. Aim of the study was to evaluate first results of the wavefront-guided LASIK procedure powered by the diagnostic device iDesign.

Setting:

EuroEyes, Clinic for refractive surgery, Hamburg, Germany

Methods:

In a prospective study 212 eyes of 106 myopic patients were treated by wavefront-guided Femto-LASIK with the VISX S4 IR Laser and the new iDesign aberrometer technology. All eyes were targeted for emmetropia. Follow up time was 3 months. Spherical equivalent was -4,14 +/- 2,44 Dpt, range from -1,0 to -10,0 Dpt. Visual acuity (UCVA, BCVA), postrefraction and amount of higher order aberrations as well as efficacy, safety, stability and predictability were evaluated. Patient satisfaction was analyzed.

Results:

Uncorrected visual acuity improved from 0,24 to 0,96, efficacy-index was 0,94. Stability after 3 month was 0,06 ± 0,43. 79% were within +/-0,5 Dpt, 96% within +/- 1,0 Dpt. No eye had a loss of 2 or more lines of BCVA. Total amount of higher order aberrations was less than in literature compared LASIK-studies.

Conclusions:

Wavefront-guided iDesign Femto-LASIK is an effective and safe procedure. A quite good UCVA even in eyes with higher postrefraction level was remarkable. Higher resolution during diagnostic procedure with a high-definition Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor seems to improve patient satisfaction.
