Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyze and investigate the incidence of clinical regression of unaided visual acuity in post-ablated eyes using NIDEK EC-5000 excimer laser machine.

Setting:

Magrabi Riyadh Center, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Methods:

A retrospective non-conclusive single-surgeon study included 3,960 virgin eyes seen from year 2003 to 2011, diagnosed with different errors of refraction and underwent uneventful excimer laser treatment by NIDEK EC 5000 inside Magrabi Riyadh Center. Incidents of clinical regression are tabulated according to the pre-operative diagnosis as: myopia, myopic astigmatism and hyperopia. Excimer laser enhancements were done and follow-ups were made in two years time with stable results.

Results:

A total of 311 eyes out of 3,960 (7.85%) had a clinical regression in less than 2 years post-ablation and underwent excimer laser enhancement. Among the three errors of refraction, hyperopic eyes had the least percentage of regression (5.98%). Myopic astigmatic eyes had the highest percentage of regression (9.96%) and myopic eyes had a variable percentage of (7.54%) of regression.

Conclusions:

The clinical outcome supports the observation that NIDEK EC-5000 generates good refractive outcome with a very minimal error of refraction regression of only 7.85% with a significantly very low incidence among hyperopic post-ablated eyes with only 5.98% of regression.
