Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate visual performance of presbyopic patients after treatment with both LASIK and implantation of a corneal inlay to simultaneously treat their refractive error and presbyopia.

Setting:

International multi-center study

Methods:

A series of 3,896 ametropic presbyopes (-5.0D to +3.0D and ?3.0D of cylinder) between 45-65 years of age from 11 centers worldwide was analyzed. A femtosecond-laser was used to create a 200-micron flap in the non-dominant eye and an excimer ablation was performed aiming for a post-operative refractive outcome of -0.75D. The inlay was then positioned on the stromal bed over the 1st Purkinje image and the flap repositioned. Where necessary, the fellow eye was treated with a traditional LASIK procedure with a refractive target of plano. The outcomes measured were spherical equivalent refraction (MRSE), uncorrected distance visual acuity (UCDVA), and uncorrected near visual acuity (UCNVA) in the inlay eye.

Results:

At 12 months, the mean MRSE was -1.1D ± 0.9D. UCDVA in the inlay eye improved from 0.3 ± 0.4 (20/60) preoperatively to 1.0 ± 0.3 (20/20) at 12 months postop. Preoperatively, the UCNVA in the inlay eye was 0.5 ± 0.4 (20/40) and 12 months postoperatively the UCNVA was 0.8 ± 0.2 (20/25).

Conclusions:

The combination of LASIK and inlay implantation improves near and distance vision for ametropic presbyopes.
