Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the safety, visual outcomes and patient satisfaction after monocular corneal inlay implantation for emetropic presbyopic patients.

Setting:

HVISĆO – Hospital da Visćo de Pernambuco, Recife, Brazil.

Methods:

The Microlens (Presbia Flexivue Microlens, Presbia Coöperatief U.A., Netherlands) was implanted in the nondominant eye of 10 emetropic presbyopic patients after creation of a 300 micron deep corneal pocket using a femtosecond laser. . Distance and near vision was assessed preoperatively and postoperatively on day 1, and at Months 1 and 3. Patients were asked questions regarding their postoperative outcomes., and underwent biomicroscopy, central keratometry, and endotelial cell count measurements.

Results:

Uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA) improved from a preoperative mean of Jaeger (J) 5 to J1 in all (100%) patients. Binocular uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) did not change after the surgery, but decreased from 20/20 to 20/40 in 20% of operated eyes, to 20/30 in 50% of operated eyes, and to 20/25 in 30% in the operated eyes. 90% of patients reported excellent or good UDVA, and 100% of patients reported excellent or good UNVA. There were no adverse events reported through 3 months postoperative.

Conclusions:

In this small cohort study, Presbia Flexivue Microlens™ implantation was a safe, and provided patients with excellent postoperative UNVA. The implantation of this lens in the cornea is an effective surgical option to treat emetropic patients with presbyopia.
