Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate the component of the higher-order aberrations (HOAs) related with the increased near visual acuity in the eyes implanted with monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs).

Setting:

Asan Medical Center, Ulsan college of medicine, Seoul in Korea

Methods:

All patients underwent phacoemulsification followed by monofocal IOL implantation in the capsular bag. The distance corrected near visual acuity (DCNVA), corrected and uncorrected near and distance visual acuity, defocus curve and HOAs were examined postoperatively at the 1-month follow-up. HOAs were measured using OPD-Scan III (Nidek, Japan). All near visual acuity were examined with a 4 mm external aperture after pharmacologic pupillary dilation. We compared the HOAs between the two groups in which DCNVA are better than 0.4 (Group I) and less than 0.25 (Group II) in decimal form (unpaired t-test).

Results:

Forty-one eyes from 40 patients were included. The mean total HOAs were 0.247±0.101 µm and 0.233±0.092 µm (p=0.864), vertical coma was -0.041±0.014 µm and 0.014±0.19 µm (p=0.015), horizontal coma was -0.017±0.025 µm and -0.004±0.011 µm (p=0.439), and spherical aberration was -0.010±0.008 µm and -0.013±0.012 µm (p=0.252) in Group I and II, respectively.

Conclusions:

Negative vertical coma induced increased depth of focus in the eyes implanted with monofocal IOLs.
