Abstract Details

Purpose:

Determination of intraocular lens position by measuring postoperative anterior chamber depth (pACD) after implantation of a monofocal-aspheric intraocular lens (IOL) and comparison with refractive outcomes and preoperative predicted effective lens position.

Setting:

International Vision Correction Research Centre (IVCRC), Department of Ophthalmology, University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany

Methods:

In a prospective clinical study the pACD of 29 eyes of 29 patients (age 64.76±9.52 years) was measured 2 to 4 months after implantation of the aspheric C-flex 970C (Rayner, UK) using Allegro Biograph (Alcon, USA) and Pentacam (Oculus, Germany). Afterwards the determined IOL position was compared with the predicted effective lens position that was calculated using preoperative biometry results (IOLMaster, Carl Zeiss Meditec, Germany) and with regards to intended vs. achieved spherical equivalent.

Results:

The mean postoperative anterior chamber depth was 4.49±0.29 mm (Allegro Biograph) and 4.65±0.37 mm (Pentacam) (t-Test, p?0.01) compared to a predicted effective lens position of 4.81±0.16 mm (Haigis formula). The difference between achieved vs. intended spherical equivalent was only +0.15±0.50 D with 90% of eyes showing a difference of ± 0.75 D.

Conclusions:

The Pentacam pACD values were higher compared to the Allegro Biograph values and showed a lower difference with regards to the predicted effective IOL position that provided a reliable IOL power calculation.
