Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the visual and refractive outcomes and IOL position after laser-assisted cataract surgery with a multifocal intraocular lens implantation in patients with senile cataract.

Setting:

Moscow, Eye Center "East Sight Recovery".

Methods:

32 eyes from 22 patients underwent femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (Victus, USA) (femtosecond group), and 38 eyes from 25 patients underwent conventional cataract surgery (control group). Both groups underwent phacoemulsification with a multifocal intraocular lens (ReSTOR +3.0 D add SN6AD1, Alcon, USA) implantation. Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery involved anterior capsulotomy and lens fragmentation based on optical coherence tomography (OCT). IOL calculation was performed with third-generation IOL formulas (SRK/T, Hoffer Q and Holladay). Postoperatively, refractive outcomes, uncorrected distance and near visual acuities, IOL position, posterior capsule opacification (PCO) were determined. Follow-up period was 3-10 months.

Results:

There were no any intra-operative complications in both groups. A capsular tension ring was implanted in 1 case in femtosecond group and in 2 cases in control group. Target refraction (Em+0,5 D) was achieved in 84% cases in femtosecond group and in 80% control group. Uncorrected distance visual acuity 20/25 or better was achieved in 91% and in 84% , uncorrected near visual acuity 20/40 (J3) or better - in 78% and 71% cases respectively. Right IOL position was observed in all cases of femtosecond group. There were 2 cases of IOL decentration in control group. PCO level was similar between both groups -9,4 % and 10,5% in 3-6 months after surgery.

Conclusions:

Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery appears to achieve a better predictability of IOL power calculation, a more high level of target refraction and visual acuity and more stable IOL position.
