Femtosecond laser cataract surgery visual outcomes in our first 48 eyes with premium intraocular lens (IOL) implantation: one year follow-up

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the post-operative visual acuity for distance and near of our first 48 femtosecond laser eyes with another group of 48 conventional phacoemulsification (phaco) eyes with similar parameters.

Setting:

Single site study, single surgeon at VISTA Eye Specialist, Malaysia

Methods:

Exclusion criteria included any eyes with pathology except for cataracts. However, hard brunescent cataracts, white intumescent cataracts and polar cataracts were also excluded. Pupils difficult to dilate, small tight palpebral fissure and uncooperative patients were also excluded. AcrySof IQ ReSTOR Multifocal IOL (ReSTOR) and AcrySof IQ ReSTOR Multifocal Toric IOL (ReSTOR Toric) have been used in this study. Each group has 28 ReSTOR eyes and 20 ReSTOR Toric eyes. The mean age for femtosecond laser eyes is 57.0 ± 6.9 for ReSTOR eyes and 59.8 ± 8.9 for ReSTOR Toric eyes. The mean age for conventional phaco eyes is 61.9 ± 5.2 for ReSTOR eyes and 59.6 ± 6.6 for ReSTOR Toric eyes. Post op Uncorrected Visual Acuity (UCVA) and Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA) for distance and near were taken at 1 year.

Results:

At 1 year, the post-op mean UCVA for femtosecond laser eyes were 0.93 ± 0.11 with 93% (26eyes) achieving 6/7.5 or better in ReSTOR eyes, 0.88 ±0.13 with 85% (17eyes) achieving 6/7.5 or better in ReSTOR Toric eyes. The post-op mean UCVA for conventional phaco eyes were 0.92 ± 0.11 with 93% (26eyes) achieving 6/7.5 or better in ReSTOR eyes, 0.90 ± 0.13 with 85% (17eyes) achieving 6/7.5 or better in ReSTOR Toric eyes. The post-op BCVA for distance in both groups (femtosecond and conventional phaco) improved out to 1 year to 6/7.5 (20/25) or better. Similarly the uncorrected Near Visual Acuity (UCNVA) in both groups improved to N4 to N5 (J2-J3) in 1 year.

Conclusions:

Our observation at 1 year showed the femtosecond laser technology for cataract surgery yields equally good visual outcome when compared to conventional phacoemulsification. Financial Disclosure: I do not have any intevested interest in ALCON or in Femtosecond Laser machine.
