Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the surgical procedure, learning curve and comparative outcomes of a femtosecond laser method of anterior capsulotomy and laser phacofragmentation

Setting:

Optegra Eye Hospital London, Hendon UK

Methods:

Observational retrospective case series. The operative and outcome parameters, intra and postoperative complications rates and patient satisfaction were examined and are reported for treatments of all grades of cataract with the next-generation laser (LensAR Laser System) and 3-D imaging technology for refractive cataract surgery.

Results:

After the first 5 treatments, the rate of successful completion of femtosecond laser capsulotomy and phacofragmentation was 40%, increasing to 86% after 21 treatments. Visual outcomes were equivalent to those of non laser-assisted treatments with significant reductions in applied ultrasound energy along with a statistically not significant difference in surgical time.

Conclusions:

The LensAR may allow reduced trauma to the eye, and after a short learning curve preserves the quality of results while delivering advantages for the patient journey compared with non laser-assisted cataract surgery.

Financial Interest:

NONE
