Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare visual performance and higher-order aberrations of patients implanted with a rotationally asymmetric multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) and a diffractive multifocal IOL.

Setting:

Asan Medical Center, Ulsan College of Medicine, Seoul in Korea

Methods:

Twenty patients (21 eyes) with implantation of a rotationally asymmetric multifocal IOL (Lentis Mplus LS-312) and 21 patients (24 eyes) with implantation of a diffractive mulitifocal IOL (Tecnis® ZMB00) were evaluated. After 1 month postoperatively, uncorrected distance (UDVA), intermediate (UIVA), and near (UNVA) visual acuities; contrast sensitivity; total higher-order aberrations(HOAs), spherical aberration, vertical coma and horizontal coma were evaluated.

Results:

Both multifocal IOLs showed good and comparable UDVA, UIVA, and UNVA postoperatively. There were no significant differences in visual acuity at all distance and contrast sensitivity between the 2 IOLs. In Lentis Mplus group and Tecnis multifocal group, total HOAs were 0.69±0.17 and 0.26±0.06 (p<0.01), spherical aberration was 0.24±0.12 and 0.00±0.04 (p<0.01), and vertical coma was -0.27±0.33 and -0.04±0.07 (p<0.01), respectively.

Conclusions:

The rotationally asymmetric multifocal IOL significantly increased HOAs, spherical aberration and vertical coma. However, both rotationally asymmetric and diffractive multifocal IOLs showed good visual performance at all distance.
