Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study the effect in vision at different distances of the combination of two refractive-diffractive apodized intraocular lenses with different near addition implanted in different eyes of the same patient

Setting:

Ophthalmic Private Institution

Methods:

Patients underwent intraocular lens implantation with an SN6AD1 ReSTOR +3 IOL in the dominant eye and an SV25T0 ReSTOR +2,5 in the non dominant eye. Visual acuity at different distances, contrast sensitivity testing, satisfaction survey and defocus curves for both eyes separate and together were performed. All tests were done at the same room illumination.

Results:

Twelve patients have been so far enrolled in the study. Seven of them have completed more than 3 months follow up. The SN6AD1 ReSTOR +3 produces 2 peaks in vision, one at 0,5 metres (0,6 vision) and the other at far distance (0,86 vision). The SV25T0 ReSTOR +2,5 increases significantly vision from 33 to 50 cm (0,3 to 0,4 vision), has a plateau between 50 and 70 mm and then increases slowly to 0,6 vision at 1 metre, 0,72 vision at 2 metres and 0,8 for far vision (this lens was implanted in the non-dominant eye). The combination of the two gives a different curve. It produces a 0,6 vision at 40 centimetres, peaks at 50 centimetres (0,67 vision), decreases slowly at 66 centimetres (0,5 vision) and then increases slowly (0,6 at 1 metre, 0,75 at 2 metres) and finally peaks for far distance (0,87 vision). The patients, except for the cases with mild amblyopia, refer better distance vision and fewer halos with the SV25T0 ReSTOR +2,5 and better near vision with the SN6AD1 ReSTOR +3.

Conclusions:

The combination of both lenses gives excellent vision for near, intermediate and distance vision with a great tolerance from the patient as the lenses share the same platform and a very similar refractive-diffractive design.
