Abstract Details

Purpose:

to analyse 1) reasons leading to post op refractive surprises following implantation of Toric IOLs. 2) to understand how the vectoral shifts induced by the malposition or rotation of toric IOLS impact the post. operative refraction.

Setting:

study of 50 eyes implanted with toric IOLs of different makes at the Vasan eye care hospitals chrompet chennai

Methods:

all patients underwent careful pre-operative workup of their corneal astigmatism. The toric IOL model was chosen based upon the online calculator and the incision site chosen to result in the least amount of residual post op astigmatism. Post operatively the accuracy of IOL position and the refractive status was analysed

Results:

toric IOL implantations were associated with a significant degree of malpositions, due to variety of reasons. however the post op refraction showed that this malposition often times induced a mixed type of astigmatism with a net spherical equivalent of close to zero. This resulted in a crude form of multifocality and a happy patient. Therefore all toric malpositions need not be set right

Conclusions:

toric iol malpositions lead to a post op mixed astigmatism with a spherical equivalent close to zero. This lead to crude form of multifocality leading to a happy patient. All toric malpositions need not be corrected
