Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate postoperative outcomes of toric intraocular lenses (IOLs) and compare the cylinder correction in eyes with against-the rule (ATR) and with-the rule (WTR) astigmatisms.

Setting:

Multicenter retrospective study

Methods:

This study included 97 eyes which received AcrySof Toric IOL (SN6AT3-5: Alcon) and were followed up for more than 1 year at 3 sites. The eyes were divided into 2 groups according to the keratometric cylinder; ATR (76 eyes) and WTR (21 eyes). Postoperative spherical equivalent refraction and refractive cylinder, visual acuity (UDVA, CDVA), contrast sensitivity, and IOL misalignment from the intended axis were evaluated.

Results:

Spherical equivalent (ATR/WTR) was -0.21±0.47 D/-0.33±0.61 D and there were no statistical differences between the 2 groups. J0 and J45 refractive cylinder vectors showed reduction in both groups, however, ATR group showed under correction (-0.72±0.43 D/-0.46±0.41 D) (P=0.015). Both UCDV (0.04/0.06 logMAR) and CDVA (-0.10/-0.10 logMAR), and contrast sensitivity did not show any statistical differences. IOL misalignment was 4.33/6.71 degrees.

Conclusions:

Toric IOL provided good visual function in eyes with ATR and WTR astigmatisms by reducing the preexisting corneal astigmatisms for more than 1 year after its implantation. However, both groups showed under correction, which was more significant in the ATR group.
