Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the calculated astigmatic power of toric intraocular lens (IOL) using Acrysof Toric calculator and iTrace toric calculator.

Setting:

Vision Research Institute, Department of Ophthalmology, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea

Methods:

This study included 50 eyes with cataract and more than 0.75 diopter(D) of corneal K (keratometry) reading of autokeratometer. Keratometry (K) was evaluated using autokeratometry, IOL master, iTrace Ray Tracing Wavefront Aberrometer, and iTrace Simulated keratometry. The toric IOL power was calculated using Acrysof Toric calculator with keratomerty (K) measured using autokeratometry or IOL master. Also toric IOL power was calculated using second generation iTrace integrated toric calculator with K measured autonomously from iTrace Ray Tracing Wavefront Aberrometer or iTrace Simulated keratometry.

Results:

The study group comprised 50 eyes of 50 patients. The average K reading was 1.49±0.83D with autokeratometry, 1.56±0.99D with IOL master, 1.42±0.92D with iTrace Ray Tracing Wavefront Aberrometer and 1.39±0.92D with iTrace Simulated Keratometry. The toric IOL power calculated from iTrace toric calculator with K difference from iTrace Ray Tracing Wavefront Aberrometer showed higher T (higher IOL cylinder power) in 24, 22 eyes (p=0.001, 0.005) and lower T in 9, 9 eyes than that from Acrysof Toric calculator with K difference from autokeratometry or IOL master respectively. The toric IOL power calculated from iTrace toric calculator with K difference from iTrace Simulated keratometry showed higher T in 21, 23 eyes (p=0.002, 0.001) and lower T in 7, 8 eyes than that from Acrysof Toric calculator with K difference from autokeratometry or IOL master respectively.

Conclusions:

Nevertheless the lower K value, the calculated astigmatic power of toric IOL using iTrace toric calculator based on both iTrace Ray Tracing Wavefront Aberrometer and iTrace Simulated keratometry showed higher T than that with Acrysof Toric calculator. Therefore, we should consider the variation between calculators to choose proper toric IOL T value.
