Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the efficacy, safety and complications with retropupillary fixated iris clip lenses in eyes with no capsular support. To compare the post operative outcome in terms of vision, safety and complications between flat configuration and plano convex configuration of iris clip lens.

Setting:

MGM Medical College, Kamothe, Navi Mumbai

Methods:

29 aphakic eyes with no capsular support underwent retropupillary fixation of iris clip lenses by a single surgeon. IOL was inserted through scleral or clear corneal incision, was enclavated in retropupillary plane with a thin rod shaped spatula after positioning it horizontally.

Results:

Post operative BCVA ranged between 6/18 N8 to 6/6N6 in both types of iris clip lenses. Most common complication encountered was edge glare 4out of 29 eyes(13.79%) two out of which required iridoplasty, other complications noted were cystoid macular edema in 2 out of 29 patients(6.90%). Pigment dispersion with post operative uveitis in 2 out of 29(6.90%) seen only in flat configuration iris clip implants. No dislocation or loss of enclavation was noted.

Conclusions:

Retropupillary fixation of iris clip lens is safe and easy way to restore vision in an aphakic patient. Both flat and plano-convex configuration types had good post operative visual recovery with good lens stability, although flat configuration type had longer duration of post operative uveitis and pigment dispersion.
