Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the results of cataract surgical treatment in patients with chronic uveitis.

Setting:

S. Fyodorov IRTC Eye Microsurgery Ekaterinburg Center, Ekaterinburg, Russia

Methods:

51 patients (70 eyes) aged from 5 to 72 years (mean 36.1 years) were enrolled. BCVA was from light perception to 0.7 (mean 0.1). In 44 eyes pupillary occlusion was seen, band keratopathy was present in 16 eyes and anterior synechiae in 5 eyes. IOP was from 6 to 50.5 (mean 16). Operation included cataract removal with posterior synechiae separation, posterior capsulorhexis and anterior vitrectomy. A three-piece IOL (MA60AC, MA60BM or US60MP) was implanted with optic part placed behind the posterior capsulorhexis. BCVA, IOP, intraocular inflammation signs were estimated.

Results:

BCVA after surgery was from 0.05 to 1.0 (mean 0.5). In 18 cases cystoid macular edema was seen, it has resolved in 6 cases after anti – inflammatory therapy and in 4 cases patients underwent vitrectomy with intravitreal kenalog injection. In 11.4% cases deposits were observed on the IOL surface. High IOP was seen in 3 cases and it was compensated with surgical treatment.

Conclusions:

The suggested method of cataract surgery in chronic uveitis with adequate pre- and postoperative anti-inflammatory therapy provides a possibility to improve visual functions. Most of postoperative complications have been successfully treated.
