Abstract Details

Purpose:

Since the introduction of the Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery, the femtosecond system is finding a new niche in the surgical armamentarium of the ophthalmic surgeon. This paper presents a series of patients with different lens and anterior segment pathologies that benefit from this new technology. Cases with phakic lenses, prior glaucoma surgery, penetrating keratoplasties, congenital cataracts, black cataracts, loose zonules and morgagnian lenses will be presented.

Setting:

Cases performed at CENTRO LASER, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Methods:

Retrospective review of the first 400 cases of Femtosecond Assisted Cataract Surgeries performed at Centro Laser in Santo Domingo with the "Catalys Precision Laser System" from OptiMedica Corporation will be reviewed. Special emphasis will be made on the advantages offered by the new laser system in the special cases and the results obtained. Cases operated with three years of follow-up will be presented.

Results:

The Femtosecond Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery has proven itself safe and effective with a 99% success rate with capsulotomies in our first 400 cases. Integral guidance OCT has allowed softening in our series without rupture of a single posterior capsule. Docking and treatment times are very efficient and the special indications for surgery can be reliably treated with the new laser platform.

Conclusions:

Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery with the Femtosecond has shown that it can perform successful capsulotomies in 99% of the cases, shorten the phaco time, reduce the phaco energy utilized, and improve the effective lens position of the intraocular lens, therefore making routine cataract surgery easier. The difficult cases become routine, and impossible cataract cases become possible.
