Abstract Details

Purpose:

The SUPRACOR presbyopic LASIK algorithm has been specifically developed for presbyopia correction in eyes with or without astigmatism. The treatment algorithm is designed to provide a varifocal ablation with a center near addition, thereby allowing good focus over a range of object distances. This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of the treatment in myopic eyes

Setting:

Istanbul Surgery Hospital, Turkey

Methods:

Seventeen myopic patients between 40 and 55 years old were treated bilaterally with the SUPRACOR presbyopic algorithm using the Technolas 217P excimer laser (Bausch + Lomb Technolas)and followed up to 6 months. All surgeries were performed with a post-operative target of 0 to -0.50 Dpt for the sphere, with both eyes having the same target or with the non-dominant eye being more negatively targeted.

Results:

The mean patient age was 45.4 years. Mean MRSE decreased from -3.36 Dpt pre-operatively to -0.22 Dpt at 1 month, -0.41 Dpt at 3 months and -0.24 Dpt at 6 months after the surgery. The mean sphere decreased from -2.92 Dpt pre-operatively to -0.01 Dpt at 1 month, -0.25 Dpt at 3 months and -0.03 Dpt at 6 months posteroperatively. The mean cylinder was -0.89 Dpt pre-operatively, -0.42 Dpt at 1 month, -0.31 Dpt at 3 months and -0.39 Dpt at 6 months after the surgery. Binocular uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) increased significantly after the surgery, with binocularly 100% of the patients seeing 0.8 postoperatively compared with only 6% at 0.63 pre-operatively. Binocular uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA) remained stable or increased post-operatively with 75% of the patients reaching 0.8or better . In addition, a marked improvement in binocular uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA) was recorded with 100% of the patients achieving 0.8 post-operatively. Regarding the safety of the treatment, no patient lost 2 or more lines of BCDVA after the surgery. Both distance corrected VA for near and intermediate vision increased postoperatively.

Conclusions:

T he SUPRACOR presbyopic LASIK algorithm is a safe and effective method of correcting vision in myopic eyes and enables binovision through the varifocal ablation with the center near addition.
