Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the effectiveness of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) transplantation in macular degeneration and optic neuropathy treatment.

Setting:

Ophthalmology Department of Tractor Plant Medical Centre, Minsk, Belarus

Methods:

Four eyes of the patients were treated with the transplantation of 3 m autologic MSCs per eye. The injections were performed into subtenon capsules toward the posterior segment of the eyeball and followed by subsequent IV MSCs injections calculated as 1m per 1 kg of body weight. 2 hours before intravenous injection of MSC He-Ne and retinal laser stimulation of fovea centralis were performed. The clinical observation took from four to eight months.

Results:

No reliable changes in OCT data have been registered. There was registered 10-30 per cent (0.1-0.3) increase of visual acuity. In the field of vision there was registered a marked decrease in intensity of central scotoma.

Conclusions:

MSCs autologic transplantation is a safe and effective method in treatment of macular degeneration and optic neuropathy.
