Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report the mid to long-term effects of CXL in corneal ectatic disease

Setting:

Maastricht University Eye Clinic, The Netherlands.

Methods:

Prospective study

Results:

Between September 2007 and December 2011, 150 eyes underwent a CXL-procedure. The mean follow-up was 22.7 months. After treatment, the steep keratometry (Preop: 49.49± 4.73 D) decreased to 49.02 ± 4.77 D and 47.80 ± 6.05D after 2 and 4 years, respectively. Linear mixed model analysis showed that the decrease of both steep the K-reading and the mean keratometry was significant over time. Two years postoperatively, endothelial cell density (2728 cellen/mm2 vs preop 2720 cellen/mm2), uncorrected visual acuity (0.77 logMar vs. preop: 0.84 logMar) and best corrected visual acuity (0.20logMar vs. preop 0.24logMar) were stable. After 1 year, 8 eyes (7%) showed progression.

Conclusions:

The flattening effect of CXL continues until 4 years after treatment.
