Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare glistenings 9 years after cataract surgery with implantation of a hydrophobic or a hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lenses (IOLs) and evaluate the effects on the corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) and contrast sensitivity

Setting:

St. Erik Eye Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden

Methods:

Cataract surgery with standard phacoemulsification was performed in one eye of 120 patients in this prospective study. The patients were randomized to either a hydrophobic lens, AcrySof SA60AT, or a hydrophilic lens, BL27, both with a sharp edge design. Nine years postoperatively, CDVA and contrast sensitivity were measured with OptecĀ® 6500 Vision Tester. Scheimpflug images were obtained to evaluate glistenings, which were graded subjectively at the slit lamp and quantified objectively by digital image analysis using computer software.

Results:

The BL27 IOLs had significantly fewer glistenings (P=0.045). We found a good correlation between the subjective grading of glistenings and objective computer processed image grading R=0,54, (P<0,001). The glistenings were not correlated with the IOL power (P=0.55), CDVA (P=0.13), or contrast sensitivity (P=0.065).

Conclusions:

The hydrophobic AcrySof SA60AT IOL developed more glistenings compared to the hydrophilic BL27 IOL. Glistenings did not affect CDVA or contrast sensitivity.
