Flap thickness predictability and variability with the WaveLight FS200 femtosecond laser using clear cones

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study the predictability and variability of the Clear Cones on flap thickness predictability using the WaveLight FS200 femtosecond laser

Setting:

Wellington Eye clinic, Dublin, Ireland. 2 surgeons.

Methods:

100 Eyes were studied prospectively. A 120 micron flap was intended. Flap thickness was measured intra-operatively using the inbuilt online pachymeter of the WaveLight EX500 excimer laser using the subtraction technique. Flap thickness was verified by OCT measurement on the first post-operative day.

Results:

The achieved flap thickness was 124 microns whereas 120 microns had been intended. The standard deviation was 8.22 microns whereas when using the aluminium cones, the standard deviation was 12.9 microns (previous retrospective study on 813 eyes)

Conclusions:

The predictability and accuracy of the WaveLight FS200 femtosecond laser on flap thickness during LASIK has been increased due to the use of Clear Cones. This is as a result of an improved algorithm during the beam control check (BCC) and the higher refractive index of the applanation plate in the Clear Cone.
