Clinical outcomes of femtosecond laser in situ keratomileusis for treatment of hyperopia and hyperopic astigmatism

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate safety, efficacy, preditability and stability of visual outcomes 6 months post femtosecondlaser in situ keratomileusis (fs-LASIK) treatment of hyperopia and hyperopic astigmatism.

Department of Ophthalmology Goethe-University

Methods:

retrospective clinical case series. 72 eyes of 36 patients (50% male, mean age 44, ranging from 22 to 64, mean manifest spherical equivalent: 1.90 D ± 1.01 D (from 0.38 to 4.15), mean manifest cylinder -1,09 D ± 1,05 D (from -3,81 to 0,00). Inclusion criteria were the suitability for fs-LASIK according to the German Commission of Refractive Surgery (KRC) guidelines, and full 6 months follow up examinations. Flap creation was performed with the FS60 femtosecond laser (Abbot), corneal ablation with the Amaris 500 / 750 excimer laser (Schwind) using the „Aberration-Free" aspherical ablation pattern and vertex centration. Postoperative analysis included corrected and uncorected visual acuity, manifest refraction and complications.

Results:

(Preliminary results, full data will be shown at presentation.) No complications occurred. No patient lost one or more lines in corrected visual acuity, 75 remained unchanged, 25% gained one line. 80% of patients achieved an uncorrected VA of 20/20 or better, 18% of 20/16 or better, 9% of 20/16. Mean postop manifest spherical equivalent was -0.03 ± 0.30 D. 50% were within 0.25D, 75% within 0.75D, 84% within 0.75D and 94% within 1D of spherical equivalent.

Conclusions:

fs-LASIK is a safe and predictable way of treatment of hyperopia, however not as precise as treatment of myopia.
