Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate in vivo epithelial thickness measurements in eyes with dry eye.

Setting:

Laservision.gr Eye Institute, Athens, Greece

Methods:

Two age-matched groups of female subjects (age ? 55 y.o.) were studied, a control and a dry eye group (40 patients each). Corneal epithelium over the entire cornea was topographically mapped via a novel anterior-segment optical coherence tomography system (AS OCT).

Results:

For the control group, central epithelial thickness was 53.15 ± 2.30 ?m, ranging from minimum 49 to maximum 58 ?m. Overall minimum thickness was 48.50 ± 3.88 ?m, ranging from 39 to 55 ?m, and overall maximum thickness was 56.28 ± 3.24 ?m, ranging from 51 to 63 ?m, respectively. For the dry eye group, central epithelial thickness was 58.64 ± 3.68 ?m, ranging from minimum 50 to maximum 63 ?m. Overall minimum thickness was 53.30 ± 3.84 ?m, ranging from 48 to 60 ?m, and overall maximum thickness was 62.35 ± 2.10?m, ranging from 59 to 67 ?m, respectively. All pair tests of respective epithelium thickness metrics between the control and dry eye group show statistically significant difference (P < 0.05).

Conclusions:

This study, based on very user friendly, novel AS OCT imaging, indicates increased epithelial thickness in dry eyes. The ease of use and the increased predictability offered by AS-OCT epithelial imaging, may be a significant clinical advantage. ?
