Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate various techniques of phacoemulsification of a soft cataract and describe a promising, novel, simple and effective technique

Setting:

Chakrabarti Eye Care Centre

Methods:

Prospective study of 50 patients with soft cataracts (LOCS III: Grades 1 and 2) undergoing PE with PCIOL implantation using various techniques. Data analyzed included clinical features, intraoperative events, surgical time, phaco time, complications & postoperative outcome. Techniques being evaluated include: chip and flip, phacoaspiration in anterior chamber, progressive lenticular debulking followed by subincisional viscodisplacement and bimanual I/A with a special aspiration cannula with a 0.5 mm aspiration port.

Results:

All techniques were found to be satisfactory in a pilot study. The results with various techniques will be described. But bimanual I/A with a 0.5 mm port aspiration cannula was a more consistent and reproducible technique

Conclusions:

Soft cataracts are challenging and the phaco surgeon should be familiar with various techniques for satisfactory outcomes in these patients. The new technique described here is safe, effective and consistent for the majority of patients with soft cataracts
