Abstract Details

Purpose:

The aim of the study was to see the safety and efficacy of Silicone tipped I/A for doing Irrigation and Aspiration in Phacoemulsification for cataract surgery and comparing Complication rates in comparison with traditional metal tipped I/A hand piece.

Setting:

Ophthalmology department, The MidYorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust with 4 hospitals Pinderfields Hospital, Clayton Hospital, Pontefract hospital and Dewsbury and District hospital, U.K

Methods:

The Ophthalmology department at the hospital switched to the use of silicone tipped I/A by all Consultant surgeons and trainees. There was a significant decrease in the rate of Posterior Capsule rupture especially during this step in surgery. We looked back retrospectively to compare complication rates before and after the use of silicone tipped I/A . A video of its use would also be presented.

Results:

There has been a significant reduction in the complication rates during I/A with silicone tip. There has been only 1 case of PC rupture during this step in Surgery with the silicone tip I/A.

Conclusions:

Silicone Tipped I/A has significantly decreased PC rupture rates especially with trainees during this crucial step. A video of its use would also be presented. Use of Silicone tipped I/A should it be used as Irrigation/Aspiration handle of choice especially when training young Ophthalmologists.
