Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study whether various peri-operative regiments influence the rate of cystoid macular edema (CME) after cataract surgery.

Setting:

Large University Academic Surgery center in the United States

Methods:

Retrospective analysis over 5 years with 5 different surgeons and 5 different post-inflammatory regiments. These included generic steroid and NSAID, name brand steroid alone, name brand steroid with name brand ketorolac, name brand bromfenac alone and name brand bromfenac with name brand steroid. End points were visual acuity and OCT confirmed CME.

Results:

The overall rate for CME was 1.9% among the group. The highest rate of CME was 2.8% and was seen in the all generic regiment. The lowest was 0% in over 1100 eyes by one surgeon in the name brand bromfenac group. Pre-operative treatment with an name brand NSAID was correlated with a lower CME rate after surgery.

Conclusions:

Pre-operative and post-operative bromfenac was the most effective at eliminating all CME, with or without a topical steroid. Name brand generics and/or lack of NSAID had the worst outcome.

Financial Interest:

NONE
