Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare both of the high order aberration (HOA) and the visual performance depending on the position of the near segment addition in the eyes with rotationally asymmetric multifocal intraocular lens (IOL)

Setting:

Asan Medical Center, Ulsan college of medicine, Seoul in Korea

Methods:

After uncomplicated cataract surgery, we implanted rotationally asymmetric multifocal IOLs (Lentis Mplus LS-312, LS-313) with near segment positioned inferiorly, superiorly, and temporally (Group A, B, and C). At 1 month, the uncorrected distance and near visual acuity (UDVA, UNVA), HOAs, contrast sensitivity, and subjective symptom of glare of halo were compared

Results:

The number of eyes with inferior, superior, and temporal position of near segment were 21, 5, and 5, respectively. In the 3 groups, UDVA was 0.09±0.09, 0.14±0.16, and 0.10±0.17, respectively (p=0.858) and UNVA was 0.31±0.21, 0.40±0.14, and 0.36±0.05, respectively (p=0.511). Vertical coma was -0.27±0.32, -0.59±0.25, and -0.15±0.16, respectively (p=0.005), horizontal coma was -0.07±0.22, -0.04±0.24, and -0.21±0.30, respectively (p=0.025), and spherical aberration was 0.23±0.11, 0.26±0.15, and 0.24±0.16, respectively (p=0.705). Contrast sensitivity and subjective symptom of glare and halo showed no significant difference

Conclusions:

The position of near segment addition in the eyes with rotationally asymmetric multifocal IOL affected coma aberration, but had no significant effect on visual performance
