Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the long-term safety, efficacy, predictability and stability of posterior chamber phakic intraocular lenses (ICL) implantation to correct high myopic eyes.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Eye & Ear Nose Throat Hospital, Shanghai, China

Methods:

1360 eyes of 743 patients who underwent the implantation of the posterior chamber toric phakic intraocular lens (Visian ICL/TICL,STAAR Surgical) for the correction high myopia and who regularly returned for postoperative examination were included in this retrospective study. We assessed the safety, efficacy, predictability, stability, and adverse events of the surgery in eyes undergoing ICL/TICL implantation preoperatively, 1 day ,1 week, 3 months, 6 months and 1 ,2, 3,4, 5,6 years postoperatively.

Results:

933 eyes were implanted ICL and 427 eyes were implanted TICL. The preoperative mean spherical equivalent was -14.74DS±4.95SD. The postoperative mean spherical equivalent was -0.85SD±1.95SD at 6 years. The mean change in refraction was -0.87±0.34DS from 1 week to 6 years. The preoperative mean UCVA and BCVA were 0.06±-0.08 and 0.65±0.40 respectively, compared with postoperative mean UCVA and BCVA, 0.76±0.33 and 0.88±0.25(P<0.001).Predictability was achieved within ±0.50D in 1086 eyes (79%) and within±1.00D in 1289 eyes (94.7%). 15 eyes(1.10%) developed late anterior sub-capsular cataract but only 3 eyes (0.02% ) were clinical significant cataract which leading to pIOL removal and phacomulsification. 3 eyes (0.02% )with TICL had large degree pIOL rotated that 1 pIOL was realigned and 2 pIOL were replaced by large size lenses. The vault had a decreased tendency over time.

Conclusions:

The clinical results demonstrated that ICL/TICL implantation was good for long-term safety, efficacy, predictability and stability for correction of high myopia throughout six years.
